Description

This beautiful dark nebula in Cepheus has a reputation of being challenging to image without dark skies. I decided to put that to the test and image from my Bortle 5 backyard. In order to measure the impact of the moon, I started when the moon was full (96% illuminated), and also imaged when the moon was waning (5%-10%). As suspected, the luminance subs when the moon was full were degrading the quality of the stack, even after LP removal and background calibration. On the other hand, a fair bit of the frames when the moon was at 74% were still usable! After manually culling frames based on background illumination value, this is the result I got. So conclusion to the experiment: yes, you can image this target in Bortle 5 and no, you shouldn't try when the moon is full and/or anywhere near Cepheus. : )
